Amago Fishing

About two weeks ago, my aunt passed away.  Her passing was only two weeks after her husband’s funeral. It was so quick; like a string being untied.

My cousin (my aunt’s son) and I grew up together.  He stopped by my mother’s house and gave us frequent updates on his parents.  When my cousin and his wife, and my family were together  in the living room we started talking quietly and said a few words about his parents. We didn’t want a sad atmosphere.  We started talking, made some jokes, and helped each other by laughing.  We knew we were sad but laughing helped us look at things in a positive way. We ate snacks, drank beers and we went back to our homes.

I have been struggling to start a blog. Something everyday and erasing lots. I wonder why I have struggled. I realized that I less  care about writing recipes or shooting pictures. But on the other hand, I do care about sharing stories and memories with cooking and spending time together in our home kitchen with my family and friends.

My memories of my aunt (who recently passed away) is connected with food and cooking. My aunt used to cook for us and made lunch boxes for her daughter and me.

We used to eat it behind the house where they had small hill. We sat near the irrigation ditch and opened up the lunch box.  I remember the salmon rice ball in the lunch box that was a pink color and rounded and cute. When I stayed over night at my aunt’s house, I got homesick and start sobbing.  My aunt called my mom at midnight and my mom came to picked me up.  My mother put me on her back and walked all the way back to our house.  I remember how relieved I felt on her back.

When I was at the funeral, all the memories came back to me.

Now, my aunt is gone, my grandma is gone, and everybody is getting old in my family. It’s the same for my favorite uncle.

I know it is limited to share this moment with people, but I want to share this moment as much as possible with my loved ones. My uncle and husband and I went fishing together before my aunt passed away, we ate kakinohazushi(sushi wrapped with persimmon’s leaf), and fished for Amago  fish (Japanese trout) from the river in Yoshino, Nara.  On our way home from fishing, we stopped at a Sushi restaurant and ate and laughed…..

Each moment, ordinary time at the moment but wonderful life memories I want to share till last second as much as I can with my family an friends.
